What is Disability?

To approve for disability benefits in the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), a disability should both “Severe” and “Prolonged” and it should prevent you from being able to work at any job on a regular basis

  • Severe means which have a mental or physical disability that regularly stops you from doing any types of substantially gainful work.
  • Prolonged means your disability is long term and of indefinite duration or is likely to results in death.

The “severe” and “prolonged” criteria should be met simultaneously at the time of application, there is no particular description of “disability” in Canada, still if you eligible for disability on other government programs or from private insurers, it may not important to be eligible for a CPP disability benefits

Based on your application and supporting documents CPP medical judges will conclude, whether your disability is both severe and prolonged.

 It takes about 4 months for the decision to be made from the receive date of your application and all necessary documents. A staff member of CPP will call to explain about application processes and type of information needed from you.

CPP Medical advice may also ask you for additional information. As they seek more information, they have very little control over how quickly we receive it.

If your application takes more than 4 months without any updates, you can contact CPP customer care for knowing your application status

When we can expect to receive these disability benefits:

If you are eligible for all the terms of Canada Pension plan (CPP) legislation, then you can expect disability benefits from 4th month after the month you are determined to be disabled.

You may receive up to maximum 12 months of retroactive payments and your monthly payments will be deposited directly in your financial intuition
